Is there
a real need for the initiative?
Yes. Exposure to pesticides endangers
human health. Children are especially at risk since their
bodies and brains are still developing. Pesticides are
linked with cancer, birth defects, asthma, endocrine
disruption, genetic mutations, acute poisoning, decreased
sperm counts, impaired neurological development in fetuses
and infants, lymphoma and leukemia, as well as other human
health effects. The United States National Academy of
Sciences estimates that 25% of learning and behavioral
disabilities in children are due to exposure to neurotoxic
pesticides.
