Tell Your Members of Congress to Oppose Immunity for the Fossil Fuel Industry
As communities across the country work to hold the largest fossil fuel polluters accountable for misleading the public about their role in the climate crisis, the fossil fuel industry and its allies in Congress are pushing legislation that could shield these companies from accountability. The so-called “Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026” (HR8330 and S4340) would put the fossil fuel industry above the law and could block communities from seeking justice in court for the climate harms they are experiencing.
Alaska is already on the front lines of the climate crisis. Our communities are experiencing rapidly warming temperatures, melting permafrost, coastal erosion, changing sea ice, worsening wildfires, and increasingly extreme weather. These impacts threaten homes, infrastructure, food security, subsistence, and the health and safety of Alaskans, while forcing communities to spend billions adapting to a crisis they did not create.
The fossil fuel industry has known for decades that burning its products would contribute to dangerous climate change, yet communities and taxpayers are left paying the growing costs. Alaskans deserve the right to seek accountability when companies contribute to harm that threatens our communities, lands, waters, and way of life.
Congress must protect our right to access the courts and hold fossil fuel companies accountable. Tell your members of Congress to oppose the “Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026” and reject any effort to give the fossil fuel industry special legal immunity. Alaska communities deserve the same opportunity as communities across the country to seek justice and hold powerful polluters accountable.

Alaskans deserve to be able to hold polluters accountable when they harm the public. As a constituent, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the so-called “Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026” (HR8330 and S4340) which would shield Big Oil companies from laws or lawsuits seeking to hold them accountable for their role in the climate crisis. Additionally, please be on the lookout for any attempts to introduce legal immunity for the fossil fuel industry into any other bills and ensure that such provisions do not move forward.
Handing the largest polluters a “get-out-of-jail-free” card is beyond dangerous. The fossil fuel industry has built massive profits while spending decades fueling the climate crisis. This legislation could dismiss climate accountability lawsuits against the fossil fuel industry brought by communities across the country. If passed, Alaskans would not only be robbed of their day in court with the largest polluters, but taxpayers would be left footing the ever-rising bill for climate damages the industry knowingly helped cause.
Alaska is already experiencing some of the most severe impacts of climate change in the country. Rising temperatures, melting permafrost, coastal erosion, worsening wildfires, changing sea ice, and increasingly extreme weather are threatening Alaska communities, infrastructure, ecosystems, and traditional ways of life. These impacts are creating enormous costs for communities and taxpayers, while the fossil fuel industry continues to profit.
Alaskans should not be forced to bear the financial burden of climate damages caused by an industry that has knowingly contributed to the climate crisis. We need to protect our right to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their outsized contributions to this crisis and ensure that communities have access to the courts when they have been harmed.
I urge you to oppose immunity for Big Oil and any similar provisions that attempt to shield polluters from accountability. Please prioritize the safety, well-being, and future of Alaskans over the interests of polluters.
