Alaska Fire Chiefs Association Opposed to Ineffective, Toxic Flame Retardants
Firefighters join movement to ban organohalogen flame retardants from household goods to protect health of firefighters and children
ACAT is working hard to make Alaska safer by eliminating organohalogen flame retardants from kids’ toys, furniture, upholstery and more. For one thing, they provide no fire safety benefit so there’s no reason for them to be in those products. But more importantly, they cause a whole range of serious health harms to firefighters and children – including cancer.
The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an alert earlier this year concerning the toxicity of organohalogens, called for federal regulation, and encouraged state and local lawmakers to take action, as well. ACAT is working to pass state legislation called the Toxic-Free Children Act, as well as a local ordinance here in Anchorage.
Alaska’s firefighters have joined the movement. Take a minute to read this great article by Jeff Tucker of the Alaska Fire Chiefs Association on cancer-causing chemicals in our homes.
