Here’s the LATEST: Protecting Alaska’s children from toxic flame retardants – how you can help!

Toxic-Free Children Act (HB 27) – with just a few weeks left in the legislative session to pass this important bill, your help is urgently needed!

The Toxic-Free Children Act (HB 27) would ban the entire class of organohalogen chemicals from children’s products and furniture. Chemicals (including organohalogens) used to make toys and furniture are not regulated or tested for safety. Organohalogens harm our health. They have a range of health effects, including learning and developmental disabilities, cancers, and reproductive impairment. Children are especially vulnerable. Firefighters also have higher exposures and suffer health disparities as a result.

As Alaskans, there are many specific reasons why this issue is important:
• Due to wind and ocean currents, Alaskans are exposed to higher levels of toxic chemicals like organohalogens.
• Organohalogens are linked to cancer, miscarriages, and birth defects.
• Persistent synthetic chemicals like organohalogens contaminate fish, wildlife, and people.

The bill passed out of the House Resources Committee on April 4. It’s in the Labor and Commerce Committee now, awaiting a hearing.

Please email the House Labor and Commerce committee TODAY to ask them to protect the health of our families and schedule a hearing. The bill has a good chance of passing this year, but if we don’t get it passed by the time the legislature gavels out on April 15, we’ll have to start all over again next year.  Please send your email now.
