Saying NO to Nonstick

Next May, the nations of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants will vote on whether to impose a global ban on PFOA, “the Teflon chemical.” While ACAT is working hard to win that ban,  you can start protecting your family right now by replacing your nonstick pans with safer alternatives.

Teflon is only one of the carcinogenic perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) used to manufacture nonstick cookware – but there are a lot of good solutions that are far safer:

Cast iron
Stainless steel

Cast iron is reasonably priced and virtually indestructible. When properly seasoned (look online for easy instructions), you’ll be thrilled with how it cooks. About the only downside to cast iron is its weight. Those with arthritis in their hands or wrists might prefer one of the other choices.
