From April 24 – May 5, 2017, Indigenous women from Alaska, Russia, the United States and Caribbean will travel to Geneva Switzerland to participate in the 8th Conference of the Parties of the UN Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). On this webinar we will share information about the impacts of POPs on Indigenous Peoples’ reproductive health and traditional foods, including those that will be considered for global elimination at COP8. Please join us to learn about this important international process and to share information about how these toxic chemicals are affecting our communities.
Presentation and discussion topics:
- The Stockholm Convention: what is it, why Indigenous Peoples got involved, and what we have achieved so far
- Work on adding new chemicals to the international banned list, and an overview of the 3 highly toxic chemicals we are hoping to see banned at the April-May 2017 session
- How POPs affect Indigenous women’s and children’s health in the Arctic and other regions; ongoing work to halt the US production and export of banned pesticides
- A rights-based approach affirming the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and other international human rights standards
